The Lake Michigan Growing Season and What It Asks of West Michigan Growers

Anyone who has spent a full year on the Lake Michigan shoreline knows the lake runs the calendar. It holds off the first frost in autumn, delays the last one in spring, and dumps humidity across the western half of the state all summer. That climate is why West Michigan grows fruit exceptionally well, and it is also why a Muskegon dispensary sourcing from local cultivators is usually selling something grown indoors rather than in a field.

The lake effect is a gift for cherries and a serious problem for a flowering plant that hates moisture.

What Lake Effect Actually Does

Large bodies of water moderate temperature. Lake Michigan warms slowly in spring and cools slowly in autumn, so the shoreline counties run cooler than inland Michigan in June and warmer in October.

That extended shoulder season is why the fruit belt exists. Blossoms are protected from late frosts, and the harvest window stretches longer than it should at this latitude.

The trade-off is humidity. Air moving off the lake carries moisture inland, and in late summer that means warm, damp nights.

Why Damp Nights Are the Problem

Cannabis flowers are dense, and density plus moisture is how you get mold.

Botrytis, usually called bud rot, develops inside a flower where airflow cannot reach. By the time it is visible on the outside, the interior is already compromised. It moves fast, it can take a plant in days, and it is the single largest risk for anyone attempting outdoor cultivation in a humid climate.

Indoor and Mixed-Light as the Answer

Controlled environments solve the problem by removing the variable.

An indoor room controls humidity, temperature and airflow directly. Growers target specific relative humidity ranges that drop through the flowering cycle, and they move air constantly, because still air in a canopy is where rot starts.

Greenhouses split the difference, using daylight while retaining environmental control. In Michigan that means dehumidification capacity most southern greenhouses would consider excessive.

The cost is energy. Environmental control is the largest ongoing expense in northern cultivation, and it is a real factor in what Michigan flower costs to produce.

Drying and Curing Are the Harder Half

Growers will tell you the crop can still be lost after harvest.

Drying too fast locks in a harsh, grassy character and strips aromatic compounds. Drying too slowly in a humid room invites the same mold that was avoided in flower. The usual target is a slow dry over roughly one to two weeks in a cool, dark, dehumidified space, followed by a cure in sealed containers where moisture equalizes.

A proper cure takes weeks. It is the least visible stage of the process and it does more for the final product than almost anything upstream.

What It Means Locally

Michigan supports a large number of small cultivation licenses, which means a lot of West Michigan flower comes from operations running a handful of rooms rather than acres of canopy.

For anyone buying, the useful questions are the same ones a fruit farmer would recognize. When was it harvested. How long was it cured. Who grew it.

The lake gives this region a lot. It just does not give a cannabis grower an easy September.
